GB Balancing Mechanism Summary – April 2018

Aurora’s Flexibility Market Summary provide a concise monthly review of recent events in key markets for flexible technologies. The initial focus is on the balancing mechanism and firm frequency response (FFR) markets with more ancillary services markets to be added over time.

Highlights of the April report include:

  1. Average short and long system prices for April fell to £73.37/MWh and £35.53/MWh respectively, remaining slightly above average for the last year.
  2. With warm weather this April the volatility of the system price is reduced, peaking at £158/MWh and only dropping below 0 on two occasions.
  3. Supplying only 4% of both accepted bid and offer volumes, coal made its smallest contribution to balancing volumes since last May.
  4. As the average power price falls across all markets, so do gas recip profits. Over 70% of profits this month were made in the imbalance market.
