Aurora’s GB wholesale market report provides a monthly summary of key characteristics in the wholesale market, ranging from overviews of fundamental system drivers to estimates of major company performance and snapshots of individual plant operation.
Highlights of the February 2019 report include:
- In addition to lower fuel and carbon prices, a sharp dip in power demand decreased average monthly power prices in February to £49.0/MWh, a £10.7/MWh fall from the previous month.
- Higher than average temperatures in February reduced monthly demand by 16% compared to January. Consequently, monthly gas and coal generation decreased by 3 TWh and 1.2 TWh, respectively.
- Total monthly gross profits fell by £222m compared to January due to the fall in demand which squeezed gross margins for thermal assets and the decrease in commodity prices which reduced the inframarginal rent of non thermal assets.
- Gross profits for wind assets fell 10% between January and February as an increase in load factors of 3 percentage points failed to ameliorate the 14% fall in capture prices.
