GB Power Market Summary – May 2018

Aurora’s GB power market report provides a monthly summary of key characteristics in the wholesale market, ranging from overviews of fundamental system drivers to estimates of major company performance and snapshots of individual plant operation.

Highlghts from the April report include:

Driven by rising gas and carbon prices, the average power price in May increased to £51.9/MWh, a month-on-month increase of 3.3%
With demand decreasing by 8.1% from April, total production fell by 1.3 TWh – 1 TWh of which was from CCGTs
Coal generation fell to a historic monthly low of 1.2% in May
Monthly profits fell £97m in May compared to April due to a 4 percentage points decrease in utilisation rate across all assets, coupled with electricity prices rising less than commodity prices
Despite a rise in wind capture price of 4%, or £2/MWh, since April, a decrease in average wind load factors of 12 percentage points resulted in the gross profits of SSE and Scottish Power falling by ~35%
