GB Wholesale Market Summary – May 2019

Aurora’s GB wholesale market report provides a monthly summary of key characteristics in the wholesale market, ranging from overviews of fundamental system drivers to estimates of major company performance and snapshots of individual plant operation.

Highlights of the May 2019 report include:

  1. Driven by a continued fall in fuel prices and demand, the average monthly wholesale price in May dropped to £39.4/MWh, a £3.8/MWh decrease from the previous month and 24% lower than in May 2018.
  2. Coal generation fell to a historic monthly low of 0.1% of total generation in May, with the previous record being 0.3% in July 2018.
  3. Gross profits for wind assets fell by approximately 36% compared to April, due to a dip in wind load factor of 10.5 p.p. and capture price of £5.7/MWh.
  4. Overall, total monthly gross profits fell by £50m in May relative to April, as thermal assets saw lower production, while renewables captured lower inframarginal rents.
