GB Wholesale Market Summary – November 2019

We are pleased to present Aurora’s latest GB Wholesale Power Market Summary report. This report combines the highlights from our previous GB System, Wind and Plant performance notes.

Highlights from our November 2019 report include:

  • With gas prices rising by 44% from October, the average power price in November rose to £43.7/MWh, a £7.6/MWh increase from the previous month but still a 29% reduction from November 2018
  • A colder month resulted in monthly demand rising by 9% (or 2 TWh) compared to October. Coupled with lower renewables output, monthly thermal generation and carbon emissions rose by 1.7 TWh and 28% respectively
  • Total monthly gross profits rose by £5.1m compared to October, as higher demand increased the utilisation rate of thermal assets by 6 percentage points, coupled with higher baseload prices
  • Gross profits for owners of wind assets fell by 18% as a 3 percentage points fall in load factors outweighed a rise in capture prices of £7.4/MWh relative to October
