GB Wholesale Power Market Summary – November 2020

We are pleased to present Aurora’s latest GB Wholesale Power Market Summary report. This report combines the highlights from our previous GB System, Wind, Company and Plant performance notes.
Key highlights include:
- With gas prices declining by 2% from October, the average monthly power price in November fell to £40.6/MWh, a £0.9/MWh (or 2%) decrease from October and a £2.6/MWh (or 6%) reduction from November 2019
- Colder temperatures caused monthly power demand in November to increase by 0.3 TWh (or 1%) relative to October while the share of low carbon generation fell 0.6 p.p. to 63% of total demand in November
- Coupled with lower gas prices, higher demand resulted in an increase in monthly thermal generation of 0.4 TWh relative to October. Consequently, carbon emissions rose by 0.3 MtCO2e (or 9%) compared to October
- Wind assets saw a decrease in their profitability in November as wind capture prices fell by £3.9/MWh (or 10%) while load factors increased by only 1 p.p (to 43%) relative to October
