Review of the new Irish Renewable Electricity Support Scheme

Ireland has published the High Level Design for its new Renewable Energy Support Scheme (RESS), the replacement for the REFIT scheme that closed in 2015. This is a major milestone in Ireland’s journey to achieve its renewable energy target of 40% renewable electricity by 2020.

A tight timeline lies ahead: the first competitive auction within the new RESS framework will be held in 2019, and successful bidders will need to deliver by the end of 2020.

In this session, Aurora will discuss the following topics:

  • What are the key differences between the new design and the RES auction design in other countries?
  • What are the prequalification requirements for auction participants?
  • What are some of the remaining design uncertainties which may affect the timing and nature of the first auctions?
  • What are the potential outcomes for this first auction?
